Natasha Freeman is a Russian-born artist based in San Francisco, California. She studied interior design at the St. Petersburg School of Design and art at the Saint Petersburg Academy of Arts. Moving beyond the Academy’s strict realism, she developed a distinctive artistic language at the intersection of Impressionism and abstraction.
Natasha Freeman is a pioneer of a new, original technique—crochet on oil painting, which is entirely her own invention. Working on an impressionistic painted background, she sews crocheted flowers, herbs, and insects directly into the surface of the canvas.
Through this process, Freeman shifts her focus away from the busy, human-centered world and toward the world of nature—plants and insects. In this intimate dialogue with nature, she explores themes of personal freedom, finding liberation and meaning within natural forms and living systems.
Her work has been exhibited in solo and group exhibitions in Russia, Kazakhstan, Greece, Italy, France, the United Kingdom, and the United States, and is held in private collections in Russia, Kazakhstan, Germany, and the United States.
